Choosing the Right Frames for Your Face

Frames come in all shapes, colors, and styles. Sometimes, the variety can be so vast it is hard to know where to start. This is especially true when you are shopping online and cannot try out the frames. Here is a guide to help you choose the right frames for your face.

Where Do You Start?

Have you ever wondered why some frames look so gorgeous on display but not when you try them on? This is so because they may be wrong for your face shape and skin tone. Determining what type of face shape you have will help guide your purchase.

What Face Shape Do I Have?

There are several ways you can determine the shape of your face.  You can do a visual assessment or take measurements. When doing a visual assessment, you can stand in front of a mirror or take a selfie. When taking measurements, you can use a tape measure.

In both cases, you need to consider your face length, jaw width, forehead width, hairline, cheekbone width, and your most prominent feature. There are seven different face shapes.

As you choose your frames, remember not to choose frames that complement your facial features. Choose those that contrast but are proportional to your face shape. These will help flatter and balance your features.

  • Oval

This shape is naturally well balanced and fits a range of shapes and styles of frames. It allows you to be bold, daring, and trendy. Consider angular and geometric shapes to complement your more rounded features. Cat-eye or horn-rimmed frames are also great.

  • Rectangular or Oblong

This is similar to the oval face, but the cheek line is straight. To contrast the length of your face, look for frames that are deeper than they are wide. They will balance out your features without looking crowded. Decorative details on the temple and bold lines are also perfect with this shape.

  • Round

Angular frames add definition and balance the round features. Ensure your frames have a thin or clear bridge and the bottoms hit just above your cheekbones. D-frames are great with this face shape.

  • Heart or Inverted Pyramid

Your frames should be slightly wider than your forehead for balance. Soft shapes are the best. Thin or rimless with light colors will balance the lines and angles on your face.

  • Square

Round and curvy frames provide great contrast. They will soften the strong angular lines of your face. Choose frames that are slightly wider than your cheekbones.

  • Diamond

Semi-rimmed glasses are the best here. They add impact to your brow line without adding bulk to your prominent cheekbones. Cat-eyes and glasses with distinct detailing on the temples are also great.

  • Triangle

The top rim of your glasses should be wider than your jawline or the widest part of your face. A strong bridge and thick frames that emphasize your brow line are also great.

Facial Skin Tone

There are warm and cool skin tones. Warm skin tones have yellow, bronze, or a golden cast to your skin. While cool skin tones have pink or blue undertones. When choosing the right frames, the color of the frame should complement your skin tone.
